An RV trip is one of the best ways to see the country and discover new and exciting destinations. Before you take off on your epic road trip, you need to be sure that you understand the differences in state laws as they relate to travel. Here are four things you need to know about state laws before you hit the road on your RV adventure.
Every state has its own unique traffic laws, making it important that you are informed as you make your way through all your destinations. For example, some states have what’s called modified comparative negligence, in which you can still claim some damages even if you were partially responsible for a car accident. Speed limits also can change as you cross state borders, so be sure to pay attention every time you mark a state off your list.
No area is immune to severe weather or a natural disaster. From hurricanes in the southern coastal areas to earthquakes and forest fires on the West Coast and tornadoes in the Midwest, you should equip yourself with knowledge about the types of disasters that are most likely to impact the destinations on your itinerary. Before you take off, be sure to check basic weather conditions and pack accordingly. If there is going to be a threat of severe weather, take care to ensure that you have a backup travel plan in place so that you are not left stranded.
Driving while intoxicated is never a good idea. However, some states are known for their restrictive alcohol laws, making it especially important that you watch what you drink. Some of the strictest states include Utah, Virginia, Arizona, Kansas, Alaska, Connecticut, Nebraska and West Virginia.
If you are bringing along firearms on your RV road trip, you are going to want to familiarize yourself with the different gun laws of every state on your travel itinerary. Depending on the state, you may be restricted on what types of firearms you can bring along as well as have to follow rules on how to legally store them.
When it comes to all these unique state laws, pleading ignorance is never going to be a suitable defense. You will enjoy a much smoother and uneventful trip if you take the time to research all these laws.
